What actually changed in your search results
Nothing broke on your site. Google changed the page. AI Overviews now sit above the traditional results for a growing share of treatment-related questions, and they answer the question right there: what detox involves, how long rehab lasts, whether insurance covers treatment. The searcher reads the answer, and a large share never click anything below it.
That is why Search Console shows the strange pattern operators keep reporting: impressions flat or rising, average position steady, clicks down. You did not lose rankings. The click itself disappeared, mostly on informational queries. High-intent searches, the detox-near-me-call-now moments, still produce clicks and calls, because an Overview cannot admit anyone.
How big is the shift? Google does not publish click-through data, and third-party studies vary widely, so treat any precise percentage with suspicion. What stays consistent across the studies and across our client accounts is the direction: when an Overview appears on a query, clicks to the results below it drop, and informational queries trigger Overviews far more often than urgent local ones do.
Read your own data before you change anything
Segment before you panic. In Search Console, split your queries into three buckets: branded (your center's name), high-intent local (near me, your city plus a level of care), and informational (what is, how long, does insurance cover). Compare click-through rates year over year for each bucket separately.
In most cases you will find the damage concentrated in the informational bucket while branded and high-intent held steady. Then check the numbers that pay the bills: call volume and admissions by source. If calls held while sessions fell, you lost readers, not patients. Call tracking is what makes that comparison possible, and it changes the emotional temperature of the whole conversation.
The response: become the source the answer cites
AI Overviews cite sources, and cited sources still earn clicks, brand impressions, and trust. The play is to be the page the Overview is built from.
- Restructure key pages answer-first so your paragraphs are liftable. The full method is in structuring content for AI citations.
- Use question-form headings that match the exact queries losing clicks.
- Add FAQ schema and keep facts stable, dated, and reviewed by a named clinician.
- Strengthen your entity and third-party corroboration so Google trusts you as a source, which is the core of GEO for treatment centers.
Owning the citation converts a threat into shelf space most of your competitors have not claimed yet. And because Overviews draw disproportionately from pages that already rank, your existing SEO equity is a head start: the pages losing clicks today are usually the easiest ones to turn into cited sources tomorrow.
Change what you measure, or the data will keep lying
Sessions were always a proxy. Now they are a bad one. If your dashboard leads with traffic, this era will look like decline even while admissions grow. Rebuild reporting around calls, qualified contacts, admissions, and cost per admission. Then add a monthly prompt panel so you can see whether AI engines name and cite you, which we walk through in measuring AI search visibility.
One more reporting habit worth building now: annotate your analytics with the date you first saw Overviews appearing on your key queries, so next year's comparisons account for the format change instead of blaming your content.
